Marquez happy to pick up 20 crucial points
Sunday, 15 September 2013
Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez had a typical smile on his face on Sunday afternoon as he reflected on a good job done at the GP Aperol di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini.
The MotoGP standings leader increased his points advantage in the championship with a hard fought second place at Misano, getting the better of his teammate Dani Pedrosa in an intriguing battle between the Honda pair.
Pedrosa finished third and therefore drops to 34 points behind Marquez in the standings, with race winner Jorge Lorenzo drawing level on points with his old rival Pedrosa in second.
Marquez reviewed his performance on the Adriatic Coast saying, “I knew that I would struggle a bit at the start of the race, because I had throughout the weekend with a full fuel tank. Then in the Warm Up I was struggling and crashed, but in the end I said to myself I just need to do it.”
Having dropped from pole to fourth in the opening stages Marquez fought back well to overcome first Valentino Rossi and later Pedrosa, around the tight 4.2km Misano layout. The 20 year-old explained, “In the first part of the race we lost too much time and made a couple of mistakes so we lost two seconds. But this is my first year (in MotoGP), it is all about experience and maybe I’m allowed a few mistakes.”
Reflecting on where this second place finish leaves him in the hunt for the MotoGP title in his first premier class season, Marquez added, “Although we could have fought for the victory we had a good race overall. I felt strong from the middle to the end. The 20 points are key because I was fourth for a lot of the race and eventually was able to finish second, so I think that’s quite important.”
“There are still five races ahead with a lot of points still to be won so I will keep the same mentality and you will still see the same Marc on track.”
