Lorenzo rejoins action in Assen Warm-Up
Saturday, 29 June 2013
MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo grabbed all of the attention as he took part in Saturday’s Warm-Up session ahead of the Iveco TT Assen, despite this being only one day after undergoing surgery in Barcelona for a broken left collarbone.
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Lorenzo suffered the injury in Thursday’s wet Free Practice 2. He travelled home to Spain on the night and was operated on between 2 and 4am on Friday morning, then flying back to The Netherlands where he landed at 5:30pm. Following a medical check at 8am on Saturday morning, he was given the green light to take part in the Warm-Up session. His participation in the race will be decided following a further check-up at 11am local time.
On-track, the Warm-Up was topped by Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi courtesy of a best lap time of 1’35.803 – just one thousandth of a second quicker than Repsol Honda Team’s Marc Marquez, with pole-sitter Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) only a further 32 thousandths in arrears. Marquez’s teammate and championship leader Dani Pedrosa was fourth quickest, while Lorenzo ended proceedings in eighth spot and seven tenths of a second off the leading pace.
Should Lorenzo be cleared to race, the Mallorcan will start 12th, having been entered into Q2 by virtue of his combined practice-topping lap time from the dry Free Practice 1. The Iveco Dutch TT Assen will begin at 3pm local time (GMT +2).
