Pedrosa and Marquez weighing up tyre choices
Friday, 14 June 2013
Heading into qualifying day at the Circuit de Catalunya, the one word on the mind of MotoGP™ teams and riders is ‘tyres’. With the hot temperatures this weekend, it is possible that Bridgestone’s hardest possible options will be chosen for both front and rear.
Electing to use a hard front tyre would appear an almost certain eventuality based on Friday practice, although the majority of the field is yet to decide whether this would also be the best choice for the all-important rear.
“It was sunny and the track was warm,” Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa begins to explain. “We had the chance to try all the tyres – soft and hard specs. At the moment it’s mixed feelings and we don’t really know what the best ones are for the race, so we’re working on the settings and the tyres to be better tomorrow.
“The hard spec is always difficult to use and we haven’t used it many times at the last few races. It could be an option but it would obviously need some work, but we have dry time so we hope to get a little better with it tomorrow.”
Teammate Marc Marquez ended the opening day in sixth place, three positions and four tenths of a second slower than Pedrosa, and is faced with a similar dilemma.
“If I’m honest, at the moment I don’t know [smiles],” he admitted when asked about the tyre conundrum. “I tried the hard one but I’m not 100% confident because I had many problems. First we need to find the best setup and then choose the tyre.”
Fastest on Friday was nine-time Barcelona victor Valentino Rossi, leading Jorge Lorenzo in a one-two result for Yamaha Factory Racing.
