WOMEN'S WEEKLY
Posted on: Thu 16 May 2013
Following the disappointment of a defeat against Everton a week earlier, Chelsea Ladies got back to winning ways last Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Liverpool in the FA WSL, and Emma Hayes's side will be hoping to make it back-to-back triumphs when we take on Bristol Academy this evening…
Big win
Last weekend's encounter with Liverpool, who are now under the guidance of former Chelsea manager Matt Beard, was always going to be a tough test, and so it proved, with the Blues showing great character to come from behind and take all three points.
The visitors broke the deadlock inside the opening six minutes when Whitney Engen rose highest to head past Shannon Lynn in the Chelsea goal, but as Liverpool failed to extend their advantage, seeing a number of chances go to waste, we hit back just before the half-hour mark.
It was a goal of real quality, as Sofia Jakobsson skilfully evaded a couple of challenges before dispatching a wonderful left-footed strike into the top corner.
The decisive goal came early in the second half when Eniola Aluko pounced on a loose ball to fire home, and while there were chances at both ends late in the game, we held on for a crucial victory.
Bristol test
The Blues return to action tonight when we take on Bristol Academy at Stoke Gifford Stadium. The game kicks off at 7pm, with tickets available on arrival, priced £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
