First words: Filipe Luis
Shortly after completing his transfer to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid, Filipe Luis sat down with the club’s official website at Cobham to discuss the move.
The Brazilian defender, 28, will set off for our European training camp on Monday with his team-mates, including fellow new arrivals Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, who will be joining up with the squad for the first time.
Luis spoke about his admiration for the players and manager at the club and outlined his determination to ensure the Blues challenge for the major trophies…
Hi Filipe, welcome to the club. How does it feel to be a Chelsea player?
It feels great, it’s been a long month of negotiations and it’s been a tough time for me but now everything’s finalised I’m very pleased. I really want to wear the shirt and be a Chelsea player. I can’t wait to play at Stamford Bridge and see the fans for the first time, I’m really happy, I just want to give my best for the team and, of course, hopefully win some trophies.
Have you been impressed with the training facilities here at Cobham?
They’re unbelievable, the best I’ve ever seen. It’s huge here, I’ve lost count of how many pitches there are. It’s a fantastic place to come to work and I hope I’ll be really happy here.
Have you had a chance to speak to any of your new team-mates yet?
No, not yet. Obviously I’ve spoken to Diego Costa but now I can’t wait to meet the rest of the squad.
You’ve played with Diego for the last few years, what will he bring to the side?
If Diego isn’t already the best number nine in the world he will be very soon. He’s a brilliant player with a big heart. I’m very happy he’s here with me because he’ll help me grow as a Chelsea player.
Your compatriots Willian, Oscar and Ramires will be joining up with the squad in a few weeks as well, you must be looking forward to that…
Yes, I know all of them, as well as David Luiz, who’s just left the club. I’ve played with Oscar and Ramires for the national team, I haven’t played with Willian but I know him from before. They are three amazing guys and we will all be big friends during my time here.
How would you describe your style of play?
I try to be the most complete player as possible. I have to be a good defender but I also need to help out in attack. However, the most important part of my role is to defend. I’m the kind of player who gives everything out on the field, you will never see me just walking around the pitch, I run all the time and try to defend aggressively but fairly. In the attacking areas I try to provide crosses for the strikers but, as I said, the most important thing for me is to defend well.
Have you had a chance to speak to Jose Mourinho?
Yes, he just told me a bit about the city, the club, the facilities, that type of thing. The tactical advice will come in training but being able to work with Jose was one of the reasons which made my decision to come here so easy. He’s an amazing coach, he’s won everything, wherever he goes he wins titles so I know I will grow a lot under him and my football will improve. I’m really happy to have him as a coach.
Did you get to watch much of the Premier League in Spain?
Yes I did, and I was able to watch a lot of Chelsea. As a kid I had a dream that one day I would play in the Premier League so when Chelsea came in for me it was an easy decision. I really like this club, I can identify with the club and I can’t wait to put on the blue shirt. Obviously Atletico played Chelsea twice last season so I had to watch Chelsea matches in advance. I know a lot about the squad, some players have left and some have come in but I think we have a very strong squad and hopefully we can win the title.
Last season we had the best defensive record in the Premier League, are you looking forward to playing alongside the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill?
Yes, we also had the best defensive record at Atletico and that’s one of the reasons why I believe this team is perfect for me. The first thing this team thinks about is defending and, for a defender, that makes your job easier. If you defend well it allows you to attack with strength, maybe on the counter attack but also playing with lots of possession. The most important thing is to not concede.
I know John Terry is an amazing player, he’s been here a long time, but Cahill, Ivanovic and Azpilicueta are all very good players. I know Ashley Cole was here, he set a high level and I know it’s going to be very hard to replace him, but I will do my best to keep the level high. Last season the team were great defensively and hopefully this time we can do even better.
Last season was an unbelievable one for you, winning the La Liga title and reaching the Champions League final. What are you hoping to achieve in your first season as a Chelsea player?
Last season was brilliant but I’ve come here to do exactly the same. I want to go one better in the Champions League and, in terms of the Premier League, I want the trophy badly. Chelsea is the best club for me to do that; we have the best coach and an amazing squad, we have some brilliant players and I hope the supporters will see the Premier League trophy at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
