DAVID LUIZ: REASONS TO SMILE
Posted on: Sat 04 May 2013
When David Luiz scored his superb goal against Basel on Thursday night, he knew some fresh friends he had made were watching on.
The Brazilian followed up a fantastic strike against Fulham just a fortnight earlier by bending a shot into the top corner to help ensure progress to the Europa League final. Both are Chelsea Goal of the Season contenders and it is hard to choose which was the more impressive, although the player himself has a view.
'The goal against Fulham was a more beautiful goal; everyone saw it as a great moment, but on Thursday night I celebrated with emotion as it meant a lot to reach the final, it made me happy,' he tells the official Chelsea website.
The second of the Brazilian's wonder goals was scored with his left foot, having previously struck using his right against Fulham.
'I'm lucky I can score with both feet, but I just try every day in training to practise scoring,' he says, 'but the main thing is to play well and help the team.'
Watching the game against Basel were the winners of a competition run with Bridge Kids, for whom David Luiz is the proud ambassador. Six children from Fleming Fulton School, a special needs school in Belfast, were flown over to London with their carers and spent the day on a tour of Stamford Bridge, then enjoying some food in the Clarke Suite in the West Stand before watching the game.
'I knew before the game that the children were coming, and checked before kick-off that they were alright. It was motivational for me to know that they were there watching the game, and of course I was really happy to score while they were here. I hope we can invite them back in the future.
'It made me so happy to see them smiling and happy.'
Looking ahead to Sunday's visit to Manchester United, it is a game he feels is: 'going to be a difficult but strong game as everyone wants to win.
'Chelsea need to win, we need the three points to be in the Champions League next year, but Manchester United will want to win as well, it's a game with history for both sides.'
