Robin breaks Dutch record
Robin van Persie bagged a hat-trick on Friday night to help Holland to an 8-1 win over Hungary and elevate himself to the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer.
Van Persie has now scored 41 times for his country, taking him past his current national team assistant manager, Patrick Kluivert.
The United no.20 netted Holland’s first, fourth and fifth goals in their stunning World Cup qualifying win in Amsterdam and now has 41 goals in just 80 appearances for his country.
Afterwards, van Persie admitted he didn’t think he would be involved against Hungary given a toe injury had marked him as doubtful in the days leading up to the game.
“I didn’t really expect that I would be playing,” he told SBS.
“At the last moment – actually, just [on the morning of the match], I made the decision to participate for an hour.”
Holland, who have already qualified for the 2014 World Cup, now face Turkey on Tuesday.
