POST-SEASON BRIEFING 2012/13
Posted on: Sat 01 Jun 2013
Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton add their full stop to the season just completed…
No handles and no Handel but how we enjoyed the Europa League and the 10 days of being joint champions of Europe: Juan Mata and Fernando Torres were simultaneously holders of the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championships, Champions League and Europa League.
The Europa was the last of a club-record eight competitions we entered this season, beginning with the Community Shield, and the only one in which absolute success was achieved. (Ten players featured in all eight.)
Despite what our north London neighbours may say, qualification for next year's Champions League is a consolation, not a trophy. The Premier League prize money was therefore shared out among the top four thus: Man United £15.095m Man City £14.34m, Chelsea £13.585m Arsenal £12.83m.
Still, given the shortfall in the remainder of the competitions, some may depict those achievements as pools of water in a desert of despair, but there were plenty of great moments on which to reflect.
Beating both Arsenal and Spurs on their own soil for the first time since 2005/06 was delightful, as were the best ever win at Stoke, the record-equalling league win over Aston Villa with seven different scorers, the defeat of Wolves by six goals, and the victory at Old Trafford in one of the final matches of Sir Alex Ferguson's historic reign.
Back-to-back Player of the Year Juan Mata's late winner ensured Chelsea were the last side to beat Ferguson's United in the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Community Shield. The Blues ended up the only team to have won more Premier League games (14) than we lost (13) against his teams.
A wonderful sideshow to the main events was Frank Lampard's progress towards the club record goalscoring record. The Blues' trio of John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and on-loan Kenneth Omeruo were also triumphant at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Within the results, though, are hidden indications of the inconsistency that prematurely ended Chelsea's title challenge. The Blues' remarkable 5-4 extra-time Capital One Cup win over Man United avoided a run of three successive defeats for the first time since almost exactly a decade ago under Claudio Ranieri.
The number of tournaments meant that the players had virtually no midweek break from club or country all season; at 21, Oscar (pictured below scoring at Anfield) made a total of 79 appearances.
Physioroom.com reported that despite (or perhaps as a result of?) that extraordinary sequence of competitive matches, Chelsea had the joint fewest injuries of the campaign (16) and the second fewest days absent through injury (565). (Stoke City's squad were the least troubled.)
The heaviest schedule in our history understandably also brought our highest ever goals tally. Twenty per cent were netted by defenders, the same by strikers, and three per cent by opponents.
Going into this final weekend of the season in some parts of Europe, Chelsea are the fourth highest home goalscorers in all competitions across Europe's top five leagues.
José Mourinho's Real Madrid have registered the most goals with 90, followed by European champions Bayern Munich on 87 and Primera winners Barcelona, 83. After the Pensioners on 78 come Manchester United with 61. Juventus, Napoli and Carlo Ancelotti's PSG have all scored 54.
