New deal for Romeu
Oriol Romeu has today signed a new three-year contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2017.
The Spaniard, 22, joined the Blues from Barcelona in the summer of 2011 and made his debut for the club in a 2-1 away win at Sunderland.
A deep-lying midfielder, Romeu impressed over the Christmas period during his first season at the club, before his involvement was restricted due to a series of niggling injuries.
He scored his first Chelsea goal in a 6-0 League Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers early in the 2012/13 campaign, netting from the penalty spot.
He then featured regularly at the heart of midfield until an injury sustained in a 3-1 victory at Sunderland ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Romeu spent last season on loan at Valencia in La Liga, before returning to Cobham for pre-season training with Jose Mourinho’s squad.
He played over 70 minutes in last night’s 5-0 friendly win against Wycombe Wanderers.
Romeu has represented Spain at Under-21 level and was part of the squad which competed at the 2012 London Olympics.
